Ophthalmological Symposium COFD “Looking into the Future” Petrovac, December 9-10, 2023
The Ophthalmology Symposium “Looking into the Future” was held on December 9-10, 2023. in the Hotel “Ami” in Petrovac, with the presence of 57 participants – 42 ophthalmologists, 8 residents, 1 optometrist and 6 nurses from Clinical centre of Montenegro (KCCG) and General Hospital Nikšić. The organizer of the Symposium was the Montenegrin Society of Ophthalmology (COFD) and the sponsor was Farmont MP d.o.o. company from Danilovgrad.
The Symposium was opened by COFD President Dr. Nikola Cvijović, who emphasized that this is the first serious meeting of ophthalmologists since 2019. and expressed good intentions for the further work of the Society.
The President especially welcomed the guests, ophthalmologists from Zagreb, Croatia, invited lecturer Prof. Dr. Mia Zorić Geber and Dr. Josip Knežević, who was presented with a gift painting and who was declared an honorary member of COFD for his merits in the education and training of ophthalmologists from KCCG in the field of oculoplastics and lacrimal duct.
The President presented a certificate of thanks to the representative of Farmont, Dr. Milun Koprivica, for his exceptional cooperation and support in the organization of the Symposium, as well as to the present executive director and owner of Farmont, Petar Popović, who accompanied her throughout the event.
The symposium program was fully implemented in the scheduled time from 12:00 to 18:00 with a lunch break from 14:00 to 15:00. Invited lecturer and guest Prof. Dr. Mia Zorić Geber presented the guidelines for the treatment of glaucoma according to the European Glaucoma Association (EGS) with an emphasis on medicament glaucoma therapy. This was followed by a sponsored lecture by Dr. Marina Đuretić Guzina about dry eye therapy and the application of the product range of the Pharmaceutical Company “Jadrangalensko” from Croatia. The lectures about the history, development and current achievements and organization of the Clinic for Eye Diseases (KCCG), presented by the director, Dr. Jelena Radojičić, as well as a lecture by Dr. Jovan Milić about the Ophthalmic Department of OB Nikšić, which has become the second ophthalmic surgical center in Montenegro since this year, were especially interesting.
In the second part of the symposium, topics from clinical practice were presented, namely: about gases and liquids in vitreoretinal surgery (Dr. Haris Kujundžić); presentation of surgical technique and case from the field of oculoplastics (Dr. Nikola Cvijović); from private practice, two papers were presented related to optic neuropathies (Dr Edita Files Bradarić), and the use of small doses of atropine in the prevention of myopia progression (Dr Sanja Borović); other topics were presented by colleagues from KCCG, related to the successful monitoring and treatment of premature retinopathy (Dr Željko Maraš) and the treatment of keratoconus, which is successfully applied at KCCG (Dr Jelena Radović); the last lecture was presented by Dr. Nerma Markišić Halilović, KCCG resident, about the treatment and prevention of recurrence of chalasion. After each lecture there was a discussion.
After the working part of the Symposium, the participants socialized at the Galla dinner. On the second day of the Symposium, a working meeting of the COFD Assembly members was held, where various topics were considered and discussed: the organization of the ophthalmology service in Montenegro, the accessibility of subspeciality offices to patients from Montenegro, the role that the COFD should play in the creation of health policy in the field of ophthalmology, about next expert meetings , about association membership and membership fee, etc.
The Symposium contributed significantly to the overview of the current level of ophthalmology practice in Montenegro, and to better acquaintance of ophthalmologists and other participants with the goal of even better cooperation in the future.
